General information

• Georgian shepherd is a Georgian national Guard dog from the Georgian mountains in the Caucasus. It is an ancient working breed from Georgia. Georgian shepherd is the lineal source of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog (80% of Caucasian shepherds has Georgian mountain dogs DNA).^[1] There are two kinds of Georgian mountain dog: short haired kazbegian dog called "Nagazi"; long haired Georgian mountain dog. Dogs of this breed are generally healthy and long lived, but hip dysplasia and occasional heart problems are known to occur. The ears of the Georgian mountain dog are traditionally cropped because they are prone to injury when a dog fights a wolf, although some modern dogs are unaltered. The Georgian mountain dog is considered to be the real Caucasian LGD, the shorter coated Georgian Mounatian Dog is an ancient working breed from Georgia. This breed served as the foundation block for the establishment of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog after the 2nd World War, but has remained both unchanged in its home region and unknown outside Georgia. The Georgian Mountain Dog is related to the dogs of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey, as well as to other types native to the Caucasian region and is believed to be a completely natural breed and an ancestor of many other LGD. There are local varieties of the breed in Georgia, but the greatest value is placed on dogs from the Kazbegi and Tusheti region. The Georgian Caucasian LGD is now fully standardized and rightfully recognized as a separate breed in its native land.

appearance

• This dog is one of the biggest dog on the planet. Georgian shepherds are Molossers. These dogs are strongly-boned, muscular, athletic, assertive, fearless, brave, and alert. Male Georgian mountain dosg grow in height between 75-85 centimetres, and weight between 65-85 kilograms. Powerful body, big head, muscles, legs makes this dog one of the strongest dogs. note: Soviet union used this dog for Dog fighting. In Russia Georgian shepherds are still used for Dogfight. Georgian shepherd behaves like king of Dogs. It seeks for dominance against anything and anybody. Pack of Georgian shepherds beats wolves and bears. Shepherds were and are using Georgian mountain dogs for defending sheep from predators.

History

• Georgians were calling this dog "Nagazi". It was used as a sheep guard dog during thousands years, so the experience of 3000 years defending sheep made this dog aggressive to strangers. Georgians are in love with this dog to the death.
• In 1950 Soviet union was breeding Georgian shepherd. Thousands of Georgian short haired and long haired "nagazis" were used to defend farms, Military objects (such is Berlin wall) and prisons. (form а.мозовер article) а.мозовер was main Cynolog of Soviet union. He said: "nagazi is best dog in CO" (Georgian nagazi like whole Georgia was under Russia's hand, Georgian shepherd was called Caucasian shepherd). From the begining of 21st century Georgian shepherd was recognized as different breed.
• From 1950-1960 years, Russia was taking best dogs from Georgia and breeding Georgian shepherds to Caucasian shepherds. what brought to Georgian shepherd a risk to be depopulated. from 1970-1980 Russia was aimed to depopulate Georgian shepherd. Russia began to take lots of dog from Georgia and began to cross them with other breeds, result is beautiful breed Caucasian Shepherd Dog.
• As we have already mentioned Caucasian Shepherd dog has 80% DNA match with Georgian "Nagazi". Cynological Federation of Georgia has strict battle with huge Russian federation of Cynologs about Caucasian Shepherd dog. In 2012 year will be result of this heated discussion, when International Cynological federation decides whose national breed is Caucasian Shepherd Dog. ^[2].
• After mass taking Georgian nagazi from Georgia, Georgian enthusiasts with support of Ministry of Environment began expedition to the regions of Georgia to describe and take photos Georgian shepherds which was left. Georgia started television broadcasting, printing articles about Georgian shepherd to popularize breed.
• After soviet collapse, Georgia began ones more to popularize this dog. Today Georgia's main goal is to breed Georgia's ancient white shepherd (also other Georgian shepherds) which are rare. ^[3].
• Unfortunately Georgian shepherds are used for Dog fighting.

Temperament

• Georgian mountain dog's life is simple and reliable: train, than calmly save energy for strict and merciless fight and return to calmly position. note: nobody can train these dogs but only owner. Georgian mountain dogs do not show any aggression if there is not danger but if danger appears, u can't find any other breed which reacts more deadlier. Also they are careful and clever, what speaks for its own about intelligence of these dogs. Traditional method of training is not suitable for them. Georgian mountain dog at the very early ages behaves like an adult dog, so if he do not want to play u can't make him play. Owner must have close relations to the dog to train him, but note that these dogs perceives owner like a leader not like owner. So Georgian mountain dogs can't be your pet, it can be your friend and protector of your property. They protect owner, family, children, property, farms and etc with great selflessness and strict, what makes them best guard dogs on the planet. Everything and everyone who belongs to the family, including children, cats, other dogs, etc, will be regarded by this dog as part of "its" family and will be respected and protected. This dog should not be left alone with children, because if play becomes too rough, the Georgian shepherd my feel the need to protect your child, and may do it extensively. It has no time for strangers, but it will greet family friends warmly. It can be rather dominant towards other dogs it does not know. Some German fanciers employ the dogs as foremost guardians and deterrents. This is not a dog for everyone. It requires an owner who knows how to display strong leadership and who is willing to spend a lot of time socializing and training. The objective in training this dog is to achieve a pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in their pack. When we humans live with dogs, we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success.
